The colorful and curative Curcuma
The exotic Curcuma plant originates from India, Malaysia and Thailand, where the plant is also known as the Siamese or Thai Tulip. Below we describe three things you probably didn’t know about the plant and the medicinal herb that comes from the roots.
KURKUMA OR CURCUMA?
In Dutch, it can be quite confusing whether it is spelled as “Kurkuma” or “Curcuma”. Curcuma is the name of the plant itself, “Kurkuma” is the herb inside the plant – which is translated to turmeric in English – and the active substance in the herb is called curcumin.
PREVENTIVE AND CURATIVE
The substance – thus, curcumin – can have preventive and curative effects. The substance is healthy for digestion and healing for liver, bile, stomach, intestines, lungs and blood. Recent research has shown that curcumin even has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.
THE FLOWER
The bracts are often seen as “the flower”, however, this is only “the house” of the real flowers. The actual flowers grow in between the colorful bracts of the Curcuma.
