Maybe you have already seen the term or the plants on our social media channels or in the GTC: Future Plants. But what exactly are these plants? Mysterious talking plants that wouldn't look out of place in a new Stars Wars movie? Not at all (although they certainly deserve worldwide fame)! But very special plants that are not (yet) for sale and hopefully can be found next year as Novelty & Specialty in our unique assortment.
Our plant hunters Ed and Fons are looking all year round for the plants of the future, which we can (eventually) proudly display during the GTC Days. Looking for special plants, no sooner said than done, you would think. But nothing less is true. New plants or species are not found just like that, they often require years of work. Together with breeders and growers, our plant hunters look for possible Future Plants. Each year they visit nurseries, markets, fairs and Flowertrials to look at plants with potential.
As soon as a new plant is scouted, a lengthy process begins to multiply the plants so that sufficient supply can eventually be grown to go on sale. The entire process, from discovery to sale, ultimately differs per plant but often takes a long time, sometimes 5 to 8 years!
This year's Future Plants can be found in the presentation wall in the GTC. Hopefully we can welcome many of these plants next year as Novelty & Specialty in our assortment. Curious about the available Novelties & Specialties at the moment? Check it out in our webshop!
